How 240-hour visa-free transit works
You must be travelling between two different countries or regions through China, for example London to Beijing to Seoul. You arrive at an approved port, stay up to 240 hours within the permitted areas, and leave for a third country or region. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate destinations.
Conditions for 240-hour visa-free transit
- A passport from an eligible country, including the UK
- A confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, departing within 240 hours
- Arrival and departure through approved ports
- Staying within the permitted areas during your transit
Visa-free transit or a visa?
If your route doesn’t meet the conditions, or you want to travel more widely, get a China tourist visa or transit visa. British citizens can also use the 30-day visa-free entry until 31 December 2026.
Planning your transit stop
Book your onward flight before you travel and keep the confirmation to hand, as airline staff check it before you board in the UK as well as at arrival. Stay within the region you arrived in, as each port has its own permitted area. If your plans might change, or you want to travel further, a visa gives you more flexibility.
